With the reality of work and school only a day away, we’re fondly looking back on our vacation at the beach. What better way to revisit than with books? Whether you’re headed to the seashore, there, or looking to reminisce, these are our favorite books about the beach.

Fiction Beach Books

beach_books_a_beach_tail-541x700A Beach Tail
by Karen Lynn Williams, illustrated by Floyd Cooper

After Gregory draws Sandy Lion in the sand with his stick, his Dad says not to leave Sandy. But Sandy needs a tail and apparently a very long one. Sandy tail finds lots on the beach until Gregory realizes he can’t find Dad. Luckily, there’s a tail to follow back. A sweet tale with beautiful illustrations, it is a good opening to talk with your kids about what to do if they get lost on the beach or other places.

beach_books_berenstain_bears-700x676The Berenstain Bears Go On Vacation
by Stan, Jan, and Mike Berenstain

We love the Berenstain Bears! This book finds them venturing out of Bear Country to the beach. Knowing the Berenstains wrote from their home in Pennsylvania and being a Jersey girl myself, I’m convinced the Bear family went to the Jersey shore like we did. The boys and I always love a good rhyming story, and it gave us ideas of things to do on our beach vacation.

beach_books_duck_and_goose-700x700Duck & Goose Go to the Beach
by Tad Hills

Goose loves the meadow. But Duck wants to take a trip. Goose follows Duck passed what they know and on through things they don’t until they arrive at the beach. But once on the hot sand and hearing the loud waves, it is Goose who gets excited, not Duck. We love these comparisons and many others throughout the book. And as we found on our vacation, it is nice to escape, but there’s no place like home.

Harry_By_the_Sea (525x700)Harry by the Sea
by Gene Zion, illustrated by Margaret Bloy Graham

Mentioned in our A Study of Harry post, our favorite white dog with black spots goes to the beach. How will he find relief from the sun? Though a fiction story, it introduces kids to seaweed, which the boys collected on our vacation. Careful after reading! You might find a sea monster next time you go to the beach.
